Washington Nationals - Division Winner, 2nd Seed in National League

  • Even without the additions they made in the offseason, the Nationals were still probably the second best team in the league after the Cubs.  Their pitching rotation is really good with Scherzer and Strasburg at the top and their lineup has a lot of depth now with Eaton and Turner in it.  They should run away with the division title.

New York Mets - Wild Card Team

  • With the re-signing of Cespedes and the elite starting pitchers in their rotation, I really like the Mets once again.  Had the front office not re-signed Cespedes I don't think they'd be a playoff team in 2017.  Instead they did, plus they have Syndergaard, deGrom, Harvey, and Matz who should give the Mets a chance to win every series.  When they do make the playoffs, I think they will be a tough out given the quality of their starting pitchers.

Atlanta Braves - Will miss the playoffs

  • The Braves will be much more competitive than they were in 2016 with the additions of Colon, Dickey, and Garcia to their rotation which will help take a lot of strain off their young starters. They also had a solid lineup late last season and brought everyone back, plus made it better with the addition of Sean Rodriguez although he will miss all of 2017 after undergoing shoulder surgery.  I think they will be in Wild Card contention until the midway point of the season but ultimately they will fall short.

Miami Marlins - Will miss the playoffs

  • I thought that Miami would be a Wild Card team this season with the development of their young hitters last season and with Jose Fernandez as the team's ace.  Instead, with the passing of Fernandez late last season, leaving their rotation in shambles, I don't think that the Marlins are going to be very competitive in 2017.  The Marlins won't have a true ace in 2017 or even a number two for that matter so staying in games will be difficult this season.

Philadelphia Phillies - Will miss the playoffs

  • The Phillies are beginning to climb out of their rebuild plan and will be more competitive than they were last season.  Their pitching rotation is pretty good considering how young most of their starters are and their lineup is pretty good  and will continue to get better as their young hitters develop.  The team probably has no chance at making the playoffs this season but will be much better than the worst team in baseball.
