#2 Ohio State 21 @ Penn State 24 (OSU -19.5)

  • My Picks: I picked Ohio State straight up (gladly wrong!) and Penn State against the spread (correct)
  • College Gameday Picks: Des, Verne, and Lee picked Ohio State, Kirk abstained from picking since he called the game
  • I watched this entire game, since Penn State is my favorite team as I grew up in Central Pennsylvania.  When Ohio State forced the safety in the third quarter to go up 21-7, I was nearly ready to give up watching.  But when Trace McSorley completed the pass to Saeed Blacknall down the sideline to give Penn State 1st and goal, I had a glimmer of hope.  Then McSorley ran a touchdown in to make the score 21-14, I thought the Nittany Lions had a chance since their defense had been doing a good job of holding Ohio State's offense all game.  A field goal made it 21-17 with 9:33 left in the fourth quarter pulled Penn State to within striking distance.  That was when Penn State's defense went to another level.  They were able to get pressure on J.T. Barrett during the remainder of the quarter, both with just a four-man rush and when sending a blitz.  Barrett was often forced to leave the pocket and find his check down receiver or had to scramble for only a few yards.  Penn State's secondary did an excellent job all game long at shutting down Ohio State's deep passing threat, so by the fourth quarter, they just had to focus on making sure that the Buckeyes weren't making first downs.  With under five minutes to go and Ohio State driving, Penn State forced a long Buckeye field goal attempt. Miscommunication, however, caused Ohio State to rush the unit onto the field and a Penn State defender got through the line, blocking the field goal, which was subsequently scooped up by Grant Haley and returned all the way for a Penn State touchdown, giving them the lead for the first time all game.  On the following drive, Ohio State was driving the field, getting to their 42 yard line before back-to-back incomplete passes put the Buckeyes in a 3rd and 10 situation. Penn State's defense, strengthened by the 100,000 plus fans surrounding them, sacked Barrett for a ten yard loss, leading to 4th and 23, with the game on the line.  After a timeout, Penn State's pass rushers once again got to Barrett, dropping him for a six yard loss, and sealing the victory for the Nittany Lions.  Being from near State College, I have experienced life as a Nittany Lion fan when they were really good and have lived through their down years from the sanctions imposed on the team.  The feeling of them pulling off a major upset is something I haven't felt since the 2005 season when they came out of nowhere and went to the Orange Bowl. That year Ohio State came into Happy Valley at 3-1 and ranked sixth but with national championship aspirations.  Penn State was 5-0 entering the matchup and was ranked 16th but were underdogs.  That game was a low-scoring affair similar to this year's game, and Penn State's defense, led by current NFLers Paul Posluszny and Tamba Hali, swarmed to the ball and got to Buckeye quarterback Troy Smith multiple times.  That win helped propel Penn State to a Big Ten Championship and an Orange Bowl victory over Florida State.  This year's upset victory has some sort of magical feeling, almost as if Penn State football is truly back.  Head coach James Franklin and the rest of the team needed this type of signature win and beating the number two team in the nation is a good place to start.  It also appears that Trace McSorley is highly talented and has the potential to be the best Penn State quarterback Penn State has had since Kerry Collins.
