2016 Outlook

  • The Texans are a team with a stellar defense, led by the NFL's best player in J.J. Watt, as well as linebackers Brian Cushing and Jadeveon Clowney and cornerback Jonathan Joseph. However, the Texans this year will go as far as their offense allows them to, which was good enough to win the division last season.  During the draft this year, the front office attempted to combat their struggles on offense by devoting a majority of their picks to that side.  Drafting C Nick Martin in the second round will help anchor their offensive line and drafting Will Fuller and Braxton Miller to play wide receiver alongside All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins and Cecil Shorts, will help give new quarterback Brock Osweiler enough weapons to be a threatening offense. The Texans also brought in Lamar Miller at running back to replace the aging Adrian Foster to give head coach Bill O'Brien and younger back without a lot of usage on his legs.  On defense, there isn't a lot to say, other than as long as J.J. Watt and Brian Cushing remain healthy they will be a top-5 defense in the league.  Anything on top of those two players is an added bonus, especially if Jadeveon Clowney can come back from injuries and prove he was worth a number one overall draft pick.  I think the Texans can take another step forward as a team while the rest of the division either takes a step back or isn't far enough into their rebuilds to be competitive. I see Houston going 10-6 and being a tough opponent in every game they play.

2016 Outlook

  • The story for the Indianapolis Colts since drafting Andrew Luck has been whether they were going to do anything to protect him.  Since his first season in 2012, Luck has been sacked 115 times and last year it caught up to he and the Colts as he played in only seven games.  In the draft this year, the Colts went and drafted four offensive linemen with their eight picks, center Ryan Kelly from Alabama with their first round pick.  With these draft additions, the Colts look to have a solid line developing and look to build communication among them and Luck.  For his part, Luck will need to work on his tendency to throw interceptions, having thrown 55 of them in his four year career thus far.  On defense, the Colts will need to work on tightening up a group that ranked in the bottom ten in scoring defense last season.  To help them, the front office brought in veteran cornerback Patrick Robinson to help Vontae Davis and drafted T.J. Green in the second round to round out their secondary in addition to Mike Adams. Since Luck's draft year in 2012, the Colts had three consecutive seasons of 11-5 and reaching the playoffs before going 8-8 last season.  It appears that after Luck's injury last season, the biggest reason the team had those good of records was due to his play.  I don't know if their offseason additions are good enough to get them back to the playoffs, in large part to the steps taken by the other teams in their division to get better, while the Colts have not done as much.  I think the Colts will go 9-7 again this season but will be a much better team than last season.

2016 Outlook

  • Let me start the Jags' outlook section by saying that I am a big fan of this team.  I love what they've been doing the past few years and think that Gus Bradley had a great thing going with this team.  On offense, a simple look at their skilled positions and you can see they're stacked. Blake Bortles has developed himself into an above average quarterback with the chance to take the next step into the elite category, if he can stop throwing so many interceptions.  His receiving corps is possibly the best in the league, led by Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns, a highly-skilled tandem, alongside tight end Julius Thomas.  The team brought in Chris Ivory at running back to help take some of the work off T.J. Yeldon and Ivory is a bruiser who looks to get into the endzone numerous times this season.  The offensive line has been shored up at tackle with the acquisition of Kelvin Beachum, a veteran who played for Pittsburgh last season. On defense, the team devoted several draft picks, starting with cornerback Jalen Ramsey, one of the most talented players in the draft.  He will immediately bring an impact to the Jags' secondary.  They also brought in safety Tashaun Gipson and Prince Amukamara to bring both skill and depth to the secondary.  The front seven, a group of skilled players to begin with, was lengthened through drafting LB Myles Jack, who had top ten talent, but fell to the second round due to a potential knee problem.  If he is able to play at a high level, and DE Dante Fowler Jr is able to live up to his number three overall pick in 2015 (he missed all of last season due to a knee injury), then this Jaguars' defense will be incredible.  I have the Jaguars improving on their 5-11 record last season and going 8-8, but I could easily seeing them upsetting multiple games and having a .500 or better record.  They will definitely be my girlfriend team for 2016.

2016 Outlook

  • In 2015, the Tennessee Titans had the worst record in the NFL, going 3-13 and earning the 1st overall draft pick.  They traded this pick to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a plethora of picks, in both the 2016 and 2017 drafts.  The picks they had for the '16 draft (ten picks total) to work on rebuilding their roster.  The good news for the Titans is that they already had their franchise quarterback in Marcus Mariota and could draft pieces to build around him.  They did this by adding a tackle to start on their offensive line in hopes of protecting Mariota, who only played in 12 games last season.  They also drafted two pieces for their defensive line, which should help their pass rush as well as stop the run.  In additions, the front office acquired RB DeMarco Murray from the Eagles, who should help their rushing attack, which was in the bottom ten of the league in yards last season.  Despite these additions, it is hard to see the Titans being competitive this season, and the team should focus instead on continuing to rebuild towards the 2017-18 season as their young players continue to develop.  I actually see them regressing some since last year, just because their division will be competitive and they play the NFC North and AFC West, both divisions which will be tough.  I think they will go 1-15 and competing for the first overall pick again in next year's draft.
