2016 Outlook

  • The Baltimore Ravens have gotten old really quick since their most recent Super Bowl championship in 2012.  QB Joe Flacco is now nearing 32 and still riding the massive extension he signed after dragging them to said championship.  Their best wide receiver, Steve Smith, is 37 and was supposed to retire after last season prior to getting injured.  After Smith, there is Kamar Aiken and Mike Wallace, who hasn't had a truly productive season since 2013 and only had 39 receptions all of last season.  One of their strong points last year, their offensive line, was further strengthened by drafting tackle Ronnie Stanley out of Notre Dame with the 6th overall pick in the draft.  In general, the Ravens will need big bounce back seasons from Flacco, RB Justin Forsett, and their wide receiving corps to have big bounce back seasons in order to be competitive.  Last year, the offense was in the bottom ten in scoring, only putting up 20.5 points/game.  2015 was also a relative down year for the Ravens, something of a new experience for the franchise.  Their defensive line is young, but generally unknown, their linebacking corps is going to get after opposing quarterbacks a lot this season, and their secondary was bolstered by signing safety Eric Weddle.  His addition should help eat into the negative difference in their scoring totals, having been outscored by 5 points/game last year.  I think the Ravens are going to continue their struggles this coming season, by going 3-13.  I don't necessarily think that the team is as bad as this record, but I find it difficult to see them winning the games I picked them to lose.

2016 Outlook

  • The Cincinnati Bengals were finally able to put it all together during the 2015 season as QB Andy Dalton made the leap from above average to borderline elite at his position and the WR trio of A.J. Green, Marvin Jones, and Mohamed Sanu was among the NFL's best.  Last season ended the way Cincinnati fans have gotten used to, a first round playoff loss at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers.  This upcoming season, the Bengals will be without Jones and Sanu who left via free agency.  The front office brought in Brandon LaFell and drafted Tyler Boyd to replace them.  This offseason also saw offensive coordinator Hue Jackson leaving to take the head coaching position in Cleveland and Bengals' head coach Marvin Lewis will have to show if last year's offense that scored 26.2 points/game (good enough for 7th in the league) was his doing or Jackson's leadership.  The Bengals also had the 2nd best scoring defense in the league last season and was mean, as typical of a Cincinnati defense.  Led by a front seven featuring Carlos Dunlap, Geno Atkins, and Vontaze Burfict, the Bengals are certain to get after opposing QBs.  Cincinnati will be really good this year, especially if Dalton can prove that last season was no fluke and that he is in the upper echelon of quarterbacks.  The regular season has been no problem for the Bengals, however.  The big test will come in the playoffs, a time when the Bengals have had problems advancing beyond the first round.  I think the Bengals will actually improve on last season's record and go 14-2 this season.

2016 Outlook

  • The Browns were really bad last year and will be really bad again this year.  They were bad enough last season that it cost head coach Mike Pettine his job and Cleveland, in turn, went out and hired former Cincinnati Browns' offensive coordinator as their new head coach.  They still do not have a true franchise quarterback and will start their 25th quarterback since 1999 when they turn to Robert Griffin III to guide their offense.  Their one bright spot on offense last season was their offensive line and they lost two of their starters in Alex Mack and Mitchell Schwartz to free agency during the offseason.  They still have future Hall-of-Famer Joe Thomas to anchor their line at tackle, however, and the rest of the line will be serviceable.  On defense they lost several of their starters including linebacker Karlos Dansby and S Tashaun Gipson There is significant reason for optimism for the fans in Cleveland, though, and not just because of the Cavaliers and Indians either.  The Browns made 14 draft picks during the draft this year, including wide receiver Corey Coleman who will lead their receiving corps for years.  They also drafted multiple pass rushers, including Emmanuel Ogbah from Oklahoma State and Carl Nassib from Penn State, both of whom should have an immediate impact.  In several years I feel that the Browns will be competitive and even in the discussion for playoff contention.  That will not happen this season, though.  I could actually see them going winless (0-16) this year and competing for the first overall draft pick.

2016 Outlook

  • The Pittsburgh Steelers had one of the NFL's best offenses last season, ranking 4th in scoring offense at 26.4 points/game.  This was due in large part to their passing game, where Big Ben threw for nearly 4000 yards in only 11 games.  The Steelers' issue in recent seasons, and last season, is that they struggle to field a healthy team all season.  Last year both Roethlisberger and Le'Veon Bell played partial seasons due to injury.  When everyone is healthy, however, they have one of the best offenses in football, with perhaps the best receiving corps.  At the start of the 2016 season, the Steelers will already be shorthanded with Bell serving a three game suspension for missing a drug test and WR Martavis Bryant missing all of the season due to suspension.  They ought to be able to overcome the loss of not having Bell, however, as DeAngelo Williams was more than serviceable in Bell's absence last season.  The Steelers will need big outputs from Markus Wheaton and the rest of the wide receivers as well as their tight ends to complement Antonio Brown.  Their defense in recent years has gone through a large-scale turnover and has started to gel together.  Their front seven is one of the best in the league and has the ability to rotate in pass rushers to always get after the quarterback.  Their struggle last year was their secondary, which the team tried to remedy by drafting cornerback Artie Burns with their first round pick.  The team should be really good this year, and will go as far as their health allows them to.  If the offensive line, which has continued to get better each season, can keep Big Ben on his feet, then the offense will stay productive despite suspensions. I think this will happen and the Steelers will go 13-3, and compete for the division championship and the top seed in the AFC.
