What I Said About Them Before the Season

  • I perfectly predicted the Kansas City Chiefs' season, projecting them to go 12-4 in the preseason.  I expected that they had a strong chance to capitalize on the regression of the Broncos due to their quarterback situation.  I've always been a fan of Chiefs' quarterback Alex Smith and think he is a very good quarterback for the roster that Kansas City has.  I believed that the team's rushing attack would be good again with Jamaal Charles returning from injury and liked their receiving weapons.  I most strongly believed in the Chiefs' defense, a unit that was elite last year and looked to be able to get a repeat performance this season.

Success/Failure

  • Success - Going 12-4 isn't easy in the NFL and it especially isn't easy going 6-0 in a division that includes Denver, Oakland, and the Chargers, which the Chiefs did.  Furthermore, they dealt with serious injuries at key positions including running back and linebacker that left their roster in shambles at certain points of the season.  That being said, there were parts of their game that the Chiefs could have been better, especially on defense as the unit significantly regressed this season.  They became a bend-don't-break unit, giving up a lot of yards but not allowing a lot of touchdowns.  This year was also the season that they could have used a quarterback that is more than a game manager, as their running game struggled and they had issues converting on third down situations.

Offseason Needs

  • This offseason the Chiefs need to work on their defense, which had quite a bit of problems this past season.  With linebacker Derrick Johnson aging and coming off a serious achilles injury, drafting an impact 'backer could be vital.  Fox Sports and CBS Sports both have the Chiefs drafting linebackers in the first round,  Ohio State's Raekwon McMillan and Vanderbilt's Zach Cunningham, respectively.  They also need help on the defensive line to defend against the rush and to work in as part of their rotation.  Lastly, drafting pieces for their secondary is an important need for them.
