What I Said About Them Before the Season
- I projected that the 49ers would go winless this season and wasn't that far off from reality. I said that the team would be really bad, which was certainly correct, and that the offense would be the worst unit. That proved to be accurate as their defense was much more productive than the offense was.
Success/Failure
- Failure - I think that there is a chance that, internally, the 49ers thought they would be competitive this season. They brought in Chip Kelly to be their head coach and appeared to have a moderately talented roster. The problem with San Francisco is that they forgot to attend to the quarterback position, where they had one of the worst situations at quarterback in the league, along with Cleveland and the Jets. Colin Kaepernick was a distraction off the field but played fairly well once he got into games and Blaine Gabbert was really bad when he played. Since the 49ers made the playoffs in three consecutive seasons between 2011-2013, the team has really taken a nosedive into mediocrity. It is appearing more and more evident that those teams that made the playoffs and made the Super Bowl once weren't the most talented teams but were the result of incredible coaching by Jim Harbaugh. After the season, Kelly and GM Trent Baalke were both relieved of their duties, showing that there was a lack of trust in the direction of the team. They have yet to replace the two and will need to do so before addressing their roster concerns. Currently, the roster is a mess and will need to have a couple of really good drafts plus spend efficiently in free agency to return to competitiveness.
Offseason Needs
- Similar to the Browns, the 49ers need a lot of players to improve this roster, so there aren't any positions that the team could draft that would do them harm. They are a team that needs a quarterback desperately but, again, there just isn't a lot of NFL-ready talent at the position in this draft. Most of the mock drafts I've looked at (CBS Sports and Fox Sports) still have San Francisco taking North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky with their first pick. While I understand that the team needs a quarterback, I think taking one with that high of a pick just to fill the position, is a mistake. Instead, I agree more with Todd McShay, who predicts that they will take either Jonathan Allen or Myles Garrett with their pick. A strong pass rusher off the edge would give the 49ers a formidable duo between Allen/Garrett and DeForest Buckner. In addition to the second overall pick, San Francisco has nine additional picks and can use them to load their roster with young, controllable talent.
- The 49ers will need to make decisions on a lot of their free agents, including several of their starters. Luckily for them, they have the second largest cap space available to spend in order to improve their roster through free agency. San Francisco has the potential to field a very talented team next year if they can draft a solid quarterback and sign or draft offensive linemen to protect him.
