What I Said About Them Before the Season

  • The Rams ended up being much worse than I thought they would be, considering I projected them to go 6-10 and they ended up with a 4-12 record.  I thought that their defense was going to be pretty good, which they were, and that their offense could be productive if Jared Goff lived up to his first overall draft pick potential.

Success/Failure

  • Failure - Last year, at the draft, the Rams gave up six draft picks, including this year's first and third round picks, to the Titans in exchange for the first overall pick.  With that pick they took quarterback Jared Goff to be their franchise qb of the future.  It's hard to ever justify trading that many draft picks away for a single pick, and it would have taken an incredible season out of Goff for the trade to be worth it.  Goff ended up not playing that well and the team's offense was horrible, as their offensive line gave up the second most sacks in the league and struggled to open up holes for Todd Gurley to run through.  Their defense was still pretty good though, ranking in the top half of the league in several key categories, but needs to be better at defending against the pass.  Ultimately, though, this season was a major failure for a franchise that was attempting to be competitive following their move from St. Louis to Los Angeles. This ended up costing Jeff Fisher his job, a decision that took far too long to happen.

Offseason Needs

  • The Rams have a lot of needs to fill to be even average in 2017 but don't have a first or third round pick in the draft.  Giving up the haul of picks to the Titans that they did has hurt the Rams because there would be plenty of talented prospects to choose from with the fifth overall pick. Instead, the team will have to rely on making savvy picks later in the draft and spending efficiently in free agency.  The Rams could find a cornerback in the second round to fill their need for a lockdown corner to help their secondary.  A mock draft that I have looked at has them taking Jourdan Lewis out of Michigan in the second round.
