What I Said About Them Before the Season
- I predicted that the Chargers would go 10-6 this season largely because I thought that their defense was upgraded enough to stop the opposition's offenses. I also thought that Philip Rivers was going to be enough to pull the offense together considering the additions that were brought in at wide receiver. I was wrong with all three predictions, as Rivers wasn't enough to save their offense, their defense struggled, and the team went 5-11.
Success/Failure
- Failure - Any time a franchise ends a season by relocating, that season was a failure. The Chargers wrapped up their season by moving the franchise to Los Angeles, so that city will now have two NFL franchises. The team made a mockery out of the whole process by changing their new logo two times as it appeared that they were first ripping off the Dodgers' logo, then were made fun of on the internet for their second logo, leading to them changing to their current logo. But back to the on-field product for this miserable franchise. They have a likely future Hall of Famer at quarterback and have done nothing in recent seasons to protect him and only started giving him talented weapons last offseason. The Chargers ended up having a good offense, ranking 9th in points per game, 8th in passing yards per game, and 14th in total yards per game. Their defense, however, was not that good. They represented the league's midway point in yards given up per game, but then 20th or worst in points per game and passing yards per game. They were surprisingly good at rushing defense and they were actually first in the league in forcing interceptions.
Offseason Needs
- The Chargers seriously need to devote some attention to their offensive line, which has been piecemealed together for several seasons now and has struggled to protect Rivers. Luckily for them, Wisconsin tackle Ryan Ramczyk should be available when their pick comes at seven. The Chargers also need help in their secondary and some mock drafts have them taking a safety with their first pick, perhaps Malik Hooker from Ohio State. They also should consider addressing their backup quarterback spot, which has been a revolving door for years now. Filling this spot now could also help that quarterback develop into Rivers' replacement in the future and this year's draft seems like the perfect draft to make that happen. With a number of quarterbacks available, and only one or two even potentially going in the first round, the Chargers should be able to grab a talented arm with their second round, or even later, pick.
