What I Said About Them Before the Season

  • I thought that the 2016 Titans were going to be a mess, despite having their franchise quarterback and solid pieces surrounding him, and were going to compete for the first overall draft pick.  I couldn't have been more wrong.  Prior to the season, I was excited about the team's move to acquire running back DeMarco Murray to share the load with rookie Derrick Henry. Ultimately, I thought that this year was going to be a year of development for the team's young players and that they were going to be competitive in 2017.

Success/Failure

  • Success - Considering I expected the Titans to nearly go winless, the fact that they were nearly a playoff team is amazing and had they been just a bit better in the division, they probably would have been a playoff team.  Quarterback Marcus Mariota took another step forward in his development, veteran running back DeMarco Murray had a career reviving season, and the team's offensive line was able to protect Mariota and help move the ball on the ground. On defense, the team was elite at defending the run but wasn't good in other areas.  With the steps taken by the team this year, the Titans should be competing for the division title next season.

Offseason Needs

  • The Titans have two first round picks, 5th and 18th, in the upcoming draft and should be able to address most of their immediate needs with those two picks and those that follow.  They need help in their secondary to shut down the opposition's passing game and there should be numerous options at both slots in the first round.  They also need a number one receiving option for Mariota and if they wanted to take Mike Williams with their first pick, it would be a smart move.  However, if they targeted a cornerback or safety with that pick, there will be receiving options later in the round.
