What I Wrote About Them Before the Season

  • I over-projected the Packers for this season, predicting that they would go 14-2 when they actually had a 10-6 record.  I figured that they would be very good this season and be competing to reach the Super Bowl for the second time in the Rodgers' era.  I thought that getting Jordy Nelson back from injury would be enough to push their offense over the edge, especially with their productive running back duo of Eddie Lacy and James Starks.  I also wrote that I believed in the team's defense and thought that they would help create a complete team.

Success/Failure

  • Success - The Packers are a difficult team to grade because of the high expectations that must be placed on them since they have future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers.  They should be a perennial favorite to reach the Super Bowl and anything short of that goal has to be disappointing.  That being said, the Packers offense came together really well considering the dumpster fire situation they had in the backfield.  On defense they were a mess, especially in the secondary where they were torched by the opposition's air attack.  All-in-all, the Packers were dragged through the season by Rodgers and his trio of high-end receivers.

Offseason Needs

  • The Packers need a lot of help on defense, particularly against the pass where they were next-to-last in passing yards given up per game.  CBS Sports has them addressing this need by drafting Washington's cornerback Sidney Jones.  They also have needs at linebacker and could use a pass rusher to replace Julius Peppers.  I think that they need a running back where neither Eddie Lacy nor James Starks were very good this season.
