What I Said About Them Before the Season
- I was pretty far off on my preseason prediction for the Giants, projecting them to go 6-10 instead of the 11-5 season they actually had. I was intrigued by the hiring of head coach Tom Coughlin and replacing him with Ben McAdoo. I felt that they needed to have a strong defense in order to find success this season and that ended up being somewhat true. The Giants attempted to address the issues they had on defense by draft two additions for their secondary. On offense, they should have been successful considering they still had Eli Manning at quarterback and Odell Beckham Jr as their number one receiver.
Success/Failure
- Success - Looking at the Giants' metrics and where they ranked in relation to the rest of the league, it is hard to determine how they even made the playoffs. Their offense ranked in the lower half of the league in all areas and their defense was nearly a bend-don't'break unit. They gave up quite a bit of yards through the air but didn't give up many points. Their front four had to have been productive considering they were second in the league in rushing defense and in the top half in sacks. Their defense was the unit that ended up carrying the team, proving that their offseason additions paid off.
Offseason Needs
- The Giants need a lot of help to improve their roster for next season. Their running back situation wasn't ideal so address that position should be important at the draft. They also need help at linebacker to continue their dominance against the run and also help against the pass. Perhaps most importantly, they need an edge pass rusher to replace Jason Pierre-Paul who will most likely be leaving this offseason via free agency. Both CBS Sports and Fox Sports have the Giants taking defensive end Taco Charlton out of Michigan with their first round pick. Drafting a tight end at the draft would also be a smart move for the front office.
