Now that the college football season is upon us and I have published a season preview and predictions for all of the conferences, I deemed it important to write a post on the potential Heisman hopefuls and who I believe will win the award. First, I started by compiling a list of the players I could think of off the top of my head.
DeShaun Watson - QB Clemson
- 2015 season: 4,104 passing yards, 35 passing TDs, 13 INTs, 67.8%, 1,105 rushing yards, 12 rushing TDs
- Led Clemson to undefeated regular season and a 14-1 overall record
- Lost to Alabama in the National Championship game after single-handedly almost winning the game
- Finished 3rd in Heisman voting last season
Leonard Fournette - RB LSU
- 2015 season: 1,953 rushing yards, 163.7 yards/game, 22 TDs
- Was on pace to win Heisman last season before consecutive sub-100 yard games against Alabama and Arkansas derailed these hopes
- Finished 6th in voting last season
- LSU's offense goes through Fournette and opposing defenses will look to stop this
- Fournette will certainly be a favorite to win as long as QB Brandon Harris doesn't have to play well enough to take votes from Fournette
Christian McCaffrey - RB Stanford
- 2015 season: 2,015 rushing yards, 3,864 all-purposes yards, 15 total TDs
- Broke Barry Sanders' NCAA record of 3,250 all-purpose yards
- First Stanford player in history to rush for over 2,000 yards
- Selected as A.P. College Football Player of the Year
- Runner-up to Derrick Henry in Heisman voting last season
- Probably the most dynamic player in college football
Dalvin Cook - RB Florida State
- 2015 season: 1,691 rushing yards, 20 total TDs
- First team All-American
- Broke Warrick Dunn's school single-season rushing record of 1,242 yards
J.T. Barrett - QB Ohio State
- College Career (2014-2015) - 3,826 passing yards, 63.9%, 45 passing TDs, 14 INTs, 1,620 rushing yards, 22 rushing TDs
- Started for Ohio State in 2014 before injuring himself in the last game of the regular season
- Finished in 5th place in Heisman voting in 2014
Baker Mayfield - QB Oklahoma
- 2015 season: 3,700 passing yards, 36 TDs, 7 INTs, 68.1%, 405 rushing yards, 7 rushing TDs
- Finished in 4th place in Heisman voting
- Led Oklahoma to College Football playoff
Rest of the Candidates
Royce Freeman - QB Oregon
- 2015 season: 1,836 rushing yards, 17 TDs
Nick Chubb - RB Georgia
- 2015 season: 6 games, 747 rushing yards, 7 TDs
Josh Rosen - QB UCLA
- 2015 season: 3,668 passing yards, 60.0%, 23 TDs, 11 INTs
Winner
- I think that if Clemson can get by Florida State in late October, then the Heisman is DeShaun Watson's to lose. A National Championship for Clemson will also go a long way to help Watson win the Heisman.
